We’re having actual-Summer in Scotland right now. There was almost-Summer a few weeks ago and that-couple-of-slightly-warm-days back in April, but now it’s hitting the kind of temperatures and crawling discomfort that my friend from Texas says she moved here to avoid.
The other day I was picking up my new glasses – the optician is next to the docks, because in Edinburgh everything is next to, if not on top of, everything else – and I saw a HUGE boat moored right beside the car park. Boats are basically my happy place and I experience child-like excitement about them, still.
I remember being a teenager and having a tour of the ship that my dad was going to be spending the next few weeks on, doing complicated things in deep water with remote controlled robots. I remember being a child and sitting below deck during a storm looking at sea out of the portholes on one side and sky out of the portholes on the other. Even now when I’m on a ferry and everyone else is inside doing their best to pretend they’re still on dry land, I sit outside on the deck, wind whipping my hair around my face, and feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
I guess the way I feel about boats isn’t about the boats themselves, or not ALL about the boats themselves. It’s about nature and technology, freedom and welcome confinement, trust and adventure. As I wandered along the edge of the dock with the only camera I had with me at the time (my Samsung Galaxy Note 4), I realised that I didn’t just want to take a picture of a boat. I wanted to take a picture of potential and of possibility.
